5 different facts on allergies

Who would not dread the discomfort brought about by allergies? There are even those people who have exaggerated reactions compared to others. Allergies can even be considered as an emergency condition because some may have hypersensitivity symptoms that can block their airways. This condition is something that you must be well-informed of so that you will know how to deal with them and to prevent it from progressing to fatal stages.

1.       You may not really know what causes you allergies

You may think that you are manifesting allergic symptoms because of the seafood you ate during lunch, when in reality, it may be due to your dog’s fur. It is really hard to pinpoint the cause of your allergies because some may have delayed reactions.

2.       Decongestants may be ineffective for your colds

If your colds is caused by allergies, the over the counter decongestants may not be effective for you. You have to see to it that you decongestants contain pseudoephedrine to be able to relieve your symptoms. This is the component that can deal with your allergies.

3.       Oral antihistamines may not work

Since allergies are usually a systemic concern, giving oral antihistamines during an allergic attack may be ineffective. This is because oral drugs have to pass through the digestive system before it can be absorbed by your blood. They are only effective if given before an allergic reaction. A nasal spray of antihistamine or an intravenous administration of it may be more effective.

4.       Pre-emptive measures can save you

The best way by which you can counteract allergies is by doing preventive measures. If you know that you are allergic to alcohol and you want to drink some, have an oral antihistamine handy before drinking. Once those mast cells and histamines come out from your body, they become more difficult to deal with.

5.       Being overweight can make your symptoms worse

As you gain weight you’ll notice that your symptoms are getting worse. The correlation between allergies and weight gain is due to the reflux of inflammatory substances to the lungs because of gastric compression. Keep your ideal body weight to ease your allergic symptoms.
